This course satisfies the Social Work Anti-Oppression CE Requirement

Description: This course is a 3-hour interactive training designed for social workers, counselors, behavioral health providers, case managers, supervisors, and other helping professionals. Participants will examine how implicit bias, stigma, culture, race, equity, and personal belief systems can influence professional judgment, client engagement, assessment, referrals, documentation, supervision, and service delivery. The training emphasizes self-reflection, culturally humble communication, ethical practice, and practical strategies for reducing bias and promoting equitable, respectful care.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

1. Define implicit bias, explicit bias, stereotype, prejudice, discrimination, stigma, cultural humility, and anti-oppressive practice.
2. Identify ways implicit bias and stigma may influence professional decision-making, client engagement, assessment, documentation, treatment recommendations, and referrals.
3. Describe how race, culture, equity, social identity, and structural barriers can impact access to services and client experiences within helping systems.
4. Use practical bias-interruption strategies to separate personal beliefs from professional responsibilities.
5. Demonstrate more objective, respectful, and anti-oppressive language in professional communication and documentation.
6. Identify strategies for supporting emotional safety, accountability, and shared mission within professional teams.

No stranger to Brook Lane continuing education attendees, Julie is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Maryland Approved Clinical Supervisor, and Clinical Manager for the Mental Health Association of Frederick County. She provides clinical supervision and consultation to clinicians across multiple behavioral health programs while continuing to specialize in psychotherapy with children, adolescents, and families. Julie has developed and delivered more than 50 continuing education trainings and is a National Trainer for Mental Health First Aid USA. Her professional interests include clinical supervision, trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, child and family mental health, workforce development, and translating evidence-based practices into engaging, practical learning experiences.
