Newly Listed | Navigating Bias, Racism, Prejudice, and Discrimination with Cultural Competency

Course Description:
This 3-hour Category I seminar explores anti-oppressive social work practice through an examination of race, culture, equity, and personal bias. Participants will examine core concepts of racism, discrimination, prejudice, and bias; explore approaches to addressing diversity in practice with clients; and deepen their awareness of their own biases and cultural identities to support more culturally responsive and equitable social work practice.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course participants will be able to:
- Explain the core concepts of: Racism, Discrimination, Prejudice, and Bias.
- Identify at least 3 methods of exploring diversity with issues working with clients
- Formulate a deeper understanding on one’s own biases and cultural identities
Featuring: Mike Shea, EdD, LCSW-C
Dr. Mike Shea has practiced clinical social work for more than 40 years. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Clarion University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Social Work from West Virginia University, and a Doctor of Education in Counseling/Psychology from the University of Sarasota.
Throughout his career, Dr. Shea has worked across the continuum of mental health care, providing leadership, mentorship, and clinical guidance to students as well as newly credentialed and experienced therapists. He has also served as adjunct faculty at Hagerstown Community College, Harrisburg Area Community College, Salisbury University, and Shippensburg University. In addition, he has developed and led several behavioral health programs and services throughout the region.
Following his retirement from Meritus Medical Center and Brook Lane Health Services, Dr. Shea established Life Counseling, LLC, where he provides counseling services to clients ages 16 and older.
