Adolescents are one of the more difficult therapy groups to counsel. Their brains function differently than adults. Many years of research has confirmed that the brain continues to develop well into a youth’s early 20’s. The area of the brain responsible for skills such as planning, prioritizing and impulse control is the last to develop. Ongoing changes in a youth’s chemistry, physiology, emotional and social development all help to make the teen vulnerable to mental health disorders. This seminar is designed to help clinicians better understand the unique differences between the teenage and adult brain and provide intervention strategies and techniques to better serve the adolescent population. Discussion will address difficult behaviors such as defensiveness, attention-seeking, risk-taking behaviors and others.
