May Recognitions

This May, let's take a moment to reflect on mental health, both in our environment and within ourselves. Our mental well-being is influenced by a multitude of factors, including our living circumstances, community, and genetic predispositions.

Recognizing Diverse Needs

Mental Health Awareness Month highlights the diverse needs of various groups:

  • Support for Older Adults: Emphasizing life transitions and the importance of seeking help at any stage.
  • Empowering Children and Teens: Encouraging resilience and coping skills within nurturing environments.
  • Maternal Mental Health: Highlighting the significance of seeking assistance during pregnancy and postpartum periods.
  • Cultural Advocacy: Advocating for culturally appropriate care and equitable access to services for racial and ethnic minority groups.
  • LGBTQIA+ Focus: Promoting inclusive environments and social support for mental well-being.

Community Engagement

Throughout May, we will share resources and information tailored to each of these communities. Additionally, we're excited to participate in various mental health events:

Borderline Personality Disorder Month

As Mental Health Awareness Month shines light on a variety of populations and topics, we invite you to explore complexities of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) as May is also Borderline Personality Disorder Month. Two percent of the U.S. population is affected by this condition, which is often overshadowed by misconceptions. It is crucial to understand the nuances of BPD in order to empathize and provide effective support.

Mother's Day (May 12)

On Mother's Day, it's understandable to have mixed emotions, especially when relationship dynamics and various situations can be challenging. On difficult days, it is important to be gentle with yourself. Acknowledge your feelings and allow yourself to experience them without self-judgment. Instead of focusing on Mother's Day in the traditional sense, create new traditions that are meaningful and comfortable to you. Don't hesitate to reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or professional for support. Talking about your feelings with someone who understands can provide both comfort and validation.

Hospital Week (May 12 - 18)

Mental health hospitals are a crucial part of our healthcare system, providing safety, hope, healing, and recovery for individuals to find the support they need in overcoming mental illness. Brook Lane's main campus is home to a 58-bed hospital, the second largest freestanding psychiatric hospital in Maryland. In the last year, our hospital served nearly 1,500 patients, helping them on their wellness journey.

"Our beautiful hospital sits on a 115-acre campus with a babbling brook, sprawling rural farm fields and spectacular mountain views that provide an excellent healing environment. That is only part of the formula, though. Our compassionate employees make the true difference by striving to ensure that patients at Brook Lane have a positive life-changing experience while here." - Jeff O'Neal, Brook Lane CEO

Memorial Day (May 27)

This Memorial Day, as we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, let's also remember the mental toll of war. Many veterans struggle with unseen wounds, and it's crucial to prioritize mental health support for those who have served. As we commemorate their bravery, let's commit to ensuring access to resources and care for those who bear the scars of conflict within. As we approach PTSD Awareness Month, familiarize yourself with the signs a veteran may exhibit related to this disorder HERE.
